In this episode of Born to Watch, we revisit Ghostbusters II (1990), a sequel that arrived with enormous expectations and delivered one of the most divisive follow-ups of the era. After the cultural impact of the original Ghostbusters, audiences waited five years for the team to return, hoping for the same mix of comedy, horror and razor-sharp satire.

What they got instead was a very different movie.

Set on New Year’s Eve, Ghostbusters II finds the team disgraced, sued and reduced to children’s party entertainment. When an ancient Carpathian villain named Vigo targets Dana Barrett’s baby, the Ghostbusters are forced back into action to stop an underground river of slime fuelled by negative emotions from consuming New York City.

On this episode, Whitey and Damo break down where the sequel went wrong, from its confused tone and lack of genuine threat to characters being sidelined or misused. Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman feels disengaged, Sigourney Weaver is underwritten, and Winston is once again pushed to the background. Even Vigo, with a grim backstory, never becomes the intimidating villain he should have been.

There are still highlights. Rick Moranis steals scenes as Lewis Tully, especially in the courtroom, and the chemistry between Lewis and Janine is one of the few elements that genuinely works. The Ecto-1 redesign is iconic, and a handful of darker moments hint at a better movie buried beneath studio compromises.

The episode also explores how Ghostbusters II reflects a larger sequel problem, playing it safe, repeating beats from the original, and targeting a younger audience at the expense of what made the first film special. From the over-lit visuals to the infamous singalong finale, this is a sequel that misunderstands its own legacy.

If you grew up loving Ghostbusters, or have always wondered why the sequel feels “off”, this episode breaks it all down with humour, honesty and a healthy dose of nostalgia.
